What is drop coverage in basketball?

Drop coverage is a defensive strategy in basketball where the player defending the ball handler in a pick and roll situation stays back, or "drops", instead of aggressively hedging or switching onto the screener. This strategy is often used to protect against the pick and roll by preventing the ball handler from getting an open jump shot or driving to the basket.

In drop coverage, the defender guarding the ball handler will typically sag off slightly to cut off driving lanes and force the ball handler to shoot from outside. The defender will also try to stay in front of the ball handler to contest shots and disrupt passing lanes.

Drop coverage is commonly used against pick and roll plays involving a proficient shooter or a player who excels at attacking the rim. By staying back and protecting against both options, the defense aims to limit the offensive options of the ball handler and force them into making a more difficult play.

However, drop coverage does have its drawbacks. It can leave the ball handler with open mid-range jump shots, and if the ball handler is a good shooter from beyond the arc, it can be risky to give them space to shoot. Therefore, drop coverage is often used in combination with other defensive tactics to mix up the defensive scheme and keep the offense guessing.
